Who We Are

From child care to active older adult fitness programs, from volleyball to volunteerism, we are intent on strengthening our community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

Youth Development: The Y is the starting point for many youth to learn about becoming and staying active, and developing healthy habits they’ll carry with them throughout their lives. And the benefits are far greater than just physical health. Whether it’s gaining the confidence that comes from learning to swim or building the positive relationships that lead to good sportsmanship and teamwork, the Y is about building the whole child, from the inside out.

Children are like sponges – they watch and absorb knowledge, skills and values from everything and everyone around them. At the Y, we believe the values and skills learned early on are vital building blocks for quality of life and future success. Just some of the programs we offer for youth include:

  • Child Care
  • Before/After School Programs
  • Preschool
  • Summer Day Camp
  • Swim, Sports & Play
  • Kiwanis Builders Club
  • Girls Night Out
  • and more!

Healthy Living: Being healthy means more than simply being physically active. It’s about maintaining a balanced spirit, mind and body. The Y is a place where you can work toward that balance by challenging yourself to learn a new skill or hobby, fostering connections with friends, or bringing your loved ones closer together through family-centered activities. At the Y, it’s not just about the activity you choose as much as it is about the benefits of living healthier on the inside as well as the outside. Healthy living opportunities at the Y are many! Just some ideas to get you started:

  • Fitness facilities for both adults and youth, including access to the WPU indoor track
  • Group exercise classes
  • Healthy Lifestyle Coaching
  • Martial Arts (Aikido)
  • Personal Training
  • Water activities
  • and more!

Social Responsibility: The generosity of others is at the core of the Y’s existence as a nonprofit. It is only through the support of our hundreds of volunteers and public and private donors that we are able to support and give back to our community. As a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening our community, the Y was created in response to social challenges and remains to this day a lifeline in communities around the world.

What We Do

The Y is a powerful ally and advocate for our communities. We offer experience and strong relationships in 10,000 neighborhoods across the nation. Since 1866, the Mahaska County YMCA has been changing lives of thousands of boys and girls, men and women of all ages, races, religions and economic backgrounds.

The Y is a not-for-profit organization with a unique opportunity to touch the lives of everyone in our community.  Our mission is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. Every day, every program, every relationship is an opportunity to practice the Y’s four core values: Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.
