Who We Are
Kiwanis of Oskaloosa organized in 1921 and since then has faithfully served local and international efforts to meet the needs of children. Kiwanis supports programming for children in literacy, recreation, health and fine arts. We have provided pediatric trauma kits to local EMT services; funded scholarships for children to participate in YMCA programs, theatre camps, and other educational programs; purchased books for local children's libraries; supported summer reading programs; and regularly contribute to food donations/collections for the Ecumenical Food Cupboard. We regularly sponsor blood drives to support local needs.
Our adult club also sponsors two youth clubs. The Builders Club is for middle-school students and is offered in cooperation with the YMCA of Mahaska County. The Key Club is made up of high-school students and is co-sponsored by the Oskaloosa Public Library. Both groups are student-led service organizations.
Our local club has also joined with hundreds of thousands of other Kiwanians to eliminate Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus--a terrible disease in developing nations that takes the lives of an infant every nine minutes. Our goal is to end this devastating illness in 2015.
In a previous worldwide campaign, Kiwanis International partnered with UNICEF to stamp out Iodine Deficiency Disorder, the leading preventable cause of mental retardation. The success of this initiative changed the world.
Kiwanis members are just like you--we care about others and want to do our part in making the world a better place for children. Join us!
